Make the Most of an Athens Summertime

Jun 05, 2017

This post has been updated with current information for 2022

So, you decided to take Mr. T’s advice: “Don’t be a fool. Stay in school.” Yep, you signed up for summer classes at Ohio University.

Though you may question this decision when the weather’s amazing and your friends are on the beach, have no fear. Summer classes at Ohio University are a great way to get a head start towards the finish line of your degree, not to mention make the best use of the summer months at your Ohio University rental. And did we mention that Athens Ohio summers are unlike any other? Relax. This summer will be amazing.

Party Like a Townie

Court Street is a totally different beast during the summer months, especially if you rent an apartment close to uptown. It’s a lot quieter, but the beauty is you and your friends pretty much have the town to yourselves. There’s no waiting in endless lines or jostling elbow to elbow in an overcrowded bar. And you can skip the waiting list at most restaurants. In the summer, you practically have Athens all to yourself.

Summer Fests

Though uptown is a lot quieter, there are festivals happening throughout the summer. The Nelsonville Music Fest brings in such high rolling bands as Wilco and the Flaming Lips. Boogie on the Bricks attracts alumni from all over the country. Ohio Brew Week celebrates the best breweries in the region, practically on your back porch.

Parks & Rec

Athens and Southeast Ohio are home to some great parks with plenty of hiking, camping and backpacking options. Strouds Run is just a bike ride away. Lake Hope offers backpacking, canoeing and camping in pristine wilderness. Burr Oak has some great swimming and fishing. Enjoy a hike up to the Ridges without ever stepping into a car.

Use that yard of yours

Outside of August and the first half of September, temperatures in Athens can stay relatively cool for the duration of the school year. This means less time outdoors and more time stuck inside. During the summer, though, the heat cranks up. The hot temps offer a wide variety of fun outdoor activities you can do from the comfort of your rental’s yard. Buy a cheap outdoor blowup pool, have a cookout or play a game of cornhole with your friends.
