Balancing School and Stress When the Weather is Nice

Updated with current information for 2022

So, the weather is gorgeous, but you’re stuck in class. How can you possibly study when every nerve in your body would rather BBQ, skinny dip or play Frisbee? Here are a few tips for making the most of a lovely day while not dropping out of school.

Live Close to Uptown

This can be dangerous advice, depending on your willpower. Renting an apartment within easy walking distance of uptown can work if you can manage moderation. You have to be honest with yourself: when the weather’s great, you’ll want to go out. Work hard, play hard — then get right back to hitting the books.

Study Outside

You have to study, but the weather is perfect. So, study outside. Go someplace quiet, get under a shady tree, and stick your nose in the books. Learning can happen in the great outdoors just as easily as a stuffy, dark library. If your rental has a yard – use it. Study on your porch or read in a hammock!

Don’t Forget Recess

All work and no play make Jack Nicholson go crazy. Don’t murder your roommate. Adults need recess, too. In fact, a 2018 study showed that more time spent outdoors is associated with lower levels of sedentary behavior and higher amounts of physical activity, so the outdoors are good for you! Rope off a couple of hours of playtime every afternoon to chill, play a little catch, or soak in some rays. And then, get back to work!

Too hot? Work by a window!

If your rental has a nice view, work by a window while you enjoy the cool air of the indoors. Be inspired by whatever your view may be; whether your apartment is on Court Street overlooking the bars or is close to OU’s campus overlooking some academic buildings, the view in Athens is unbeatable.
