Our 3 Favorite Ways to Take Advantage of a Rental with a Yard

Feb 19, 2024

It’s everyone’s dream when searching for rental houses around Athens to land one with a yard—while Athens is considerably green and surrounded by nature, finding that coveted rental home in Athens that has a yard can face you with some stiff competition from other students and renters hoping to do the same.

But, once you’ve got it, it’s yours, and you can do as little or as much as you want with it. Here are some of our favorite tips to maximize the usage and enjoyment of your new off campus rental home near Ohio University.

Create a space to relax

As is the goal for any student rental homes around Ohio University’s campus, create a place to relax in your yard. Maybe hang up a hammock, set up a few chairs, or add some decorative string lights. Adding smaller elements and décor to make your outdoor space homier will go a long way in making sure you’re able to use and enjoy it. With a little effort, you could have one of the coolest student rental homes in Athens.

One of the best parts of having a yard is being able to have an outdoor space with some privacy, and you’ll easily be able to spend time comfortably outdoors in Athens for most of the fall semester and the last couple months of the spring semester.

Throw some get-togethers

People enjoy hanging around outside. It’s kind of hardwired in our DNA. And when you have a rental space around Ohio University that includes a yard, all of your friends are going to want to come over to your pad.

Hang outside with your friends—maybe with those string lights that we mentioned above turned on—and host small get-togethers with good music, drinks, and activities. They’ll be the talk of the block! Suddenly those studio apartments in Athens around the bars aren’t going to sound as appealing.

Garden and grow your own food

One of the best parts about having a yard to go along with your college rental home in Athens is the ability to grow some of your own fresh herbs and vegetables. Start with some basic herbs and transition into more fall-oriented vegetables for the first semester of the year like spinach, kale, carrots, and onions.

Take all that fresh produce and share it with friends, or cook yourself some fantastic meals to keep yourself fueled for the semester ahead.

Having a yard with your rental home can be a ton of fun, so be sure to make the most of it!
