We get it—it’s hard seeing your kids go off to college. They’re not around nearly as often anymore, and they’re getting ready to forge their own path in the world. Thankfully, most colleges like OU offer opportunities for parents to sneak down and see their kids who are living on campus or at an off-campus rental within walking distance of Ohio University. For example, there’s the usual parents’ weekend at Ohio University, but they also throw on a weekend just for moms! The yearly OU Moms Weekend is returning in 2024 on the weekend of April 5th-7th, and it’s bound to be a ton of fun just like last year’s event.
Moms do so much for us over the course of our lives. From raising us to making home-cooked meals and all the support and unconditional love in between, it’s hard being at school, away from one of your biggest supporters. So, take some time on Moms Weekend to invite your mom down and show her all that Athens has to offer. You can even show off your sweet rental apartment in Athens—and who knows, maybe she’ll get you a thing or two for it!
Given that Moms Weekend takes place during the early spring, just as things are slightly beginning to warm up in southern Ohio, activities can focus on the outdoors, like hiking around Hocking Hills or Strouds Run, or there are Moms Weekend-specific events. In past years, things like special movie screenings, wine tastings, star gazing, and more have been on the menu to show mom a good time over the weekend while she’s in Athens.
Beyond the officially-sanctioned events, it’s always nice to take advantage of your time with mom and show her around Athens. Take her on a walk around Ohio University’s campus, point out some buildings you have classes in, and take her out for some good, local food at Casa or grab a quick drink at Ciderhouse. At the end of the day—or weekend in this case—Moms Weekend is all about spending quality time with your mom and showing her what you’ve been up to while off at college. Trust us when we say the memories made will last a lifetime.
