OU Students: Broaden Horizons by Volunteering

May 25, 2020

OK, so it’s not like you need one more thing to do, on top of attending class, staying fit, socializing with friends and holding down duties as vp of the French Club or the serving on the Student Senate.

But what about volunteering? We’re not just talking the occasional bake sale or car wash for your sorority or fraternity, but true volunteering – as in seriously helping someone in need or supporting a worthy cause. Could be to benefit humans, but doesn’t have to be: could be walking dogs at the local shelter, or helping with wild animal rescue. Maybe you’re more inspired to help a community institution, by fund raising for the local arts or donating gallery time, or perhaps working trail maintenance for local parks.

And for sure, listing your volunteer gigs looks good on your resume, but it’s also important just to do it because it’s the right thing. Here are some local volunteer opportunities for you and your friends. Many are within walking distance of your university rentals Athens Ohio.

  1. Big Brothers Big Sisters — Mentor a child.
  2. Dairy Barn – Meet and greet visitors to this community/arts center.
  3. Athens Books to Prisoners – Help pack and mail books to fulfill requests from people in prison.
  4. Hospice Visitor in the Hospital – Give relief to families through Ohio Health Appalachian Community Hospice.
  5. Citizens Climate Lobby – Be a Sustainable Climate Environment Advocate.
  6. Athens Habitat for Humanity – Participate in community restitution.
  7. The Laurels of Athens – Volunteers help guests at nursing home maintain a healthful, independent life.
  8. Community Food Initiatives – Build community resilience by supporting a local food system.

There are many more, and you are bound to find the right volunteer opportunity for your skills and personality.
