OU Fall Break Gives Students a Chance to Regroup

Oct 04, 2019

This post has been updated current information for 2022

By the time late September and October roll around, it seems you’ve been in school a lot longer than the six weeks or so since the first day of the fall semester in August. Maybe you’re a freshman, used to having quite a few breaks throughout the school year, and who knew you’d have to study so much more in college than in high school? But take heart, OU is one university with a heart, granting you a welcome day of relief – Sept. 30 – your fall break.

Be aware that not every college or university grants a fall break.

But colleges that do offer a fall break show that they recognize that students work hard toward their mid-terms and need a little bit of a rest to look forward to. While a day may not be enough for you to pack up and go home for a rest with mom and dad, we’ll bet you find a day off a lifesaver – as do faculty, who most likely spend it grading exams.

You Deserve a Break

Some people may grouse about why college students need a fall break. After all, you don’t get one in the real working world. But we’re here to say, going to college is your job right now, and you’ve paid your tuition, your university has deemed it wise to give you a break – so enjoy it. The federal government mandates certain days as holidays for workers. You’re doing your job, so a little break can be a great way to encourage you through the rest of the semester.

So how will you spend it? If you’re an in-state student, you may have time to close the door on your Athens, Ohio off campus housing or dorm and run home, but if not, we’ll bet you’ll find plenty of other students sticking around and enjoying the cool fall weather. At the very least, you could use the day to study and get ready for the rest of the semester.

Hang out with friends at your place

Weather in Athens around this time of year can get a little funky. It can be 80 degrees one day and 50 degrees the next, sunny one moment and rainy the next.

If you’re trapped in your apartment due to unfortunate weather, it’s never a bad idea to invite your friends over for a chill day as you all best the elements. It doesn’t matter if your rental is small or large, one-bedroom, two-bedroom or three-bedroom, etc. There’s always room for friends.

If the weather is nice, go outside! Soak in the fresh air and the sunshine! Should your home have a yard, set up some games like cornhole or pong and play away. And if your place has a nice view, maybe take things slow and be introspective by watching a sunset with your crew.

Catch-up on work

Even though this day should be spent relaxing and basking in your free time – we know not everyone is not always that fortunate. If you must, use this day to catch-up or get ahead on your studies. It is why you’re here, after all. If your apartment or home is close to campus, head over to Alden or your favorite study spot. It will almost surely be quieter than normal due to many Bobcats headed home for the long weekend.
