Fall Down the Rabbit Hole: BalletMet’s Alice Enchants Columbus

Jan 22, 2024

Alice in Wonderland is a classic tale for a reason—it’s got outlandish, zany characters, a relatable protagonist, and… boundless dancing? The BalletMet show, Alice, returns to Columbus from February 9th to the 11th of 2024.

Alice is a spectacular ballet performance that includes top-notch dancing, dazzling costumes, and breathtaking choreography. The performance follows the classic story starting in Victorian England where Alice fatefully follows that white rabbit down the hole and into a magical world where she meets all sorts of characters, like the Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter, the Queen, and plenty of others as she attempts to find her way around this world and back to her own.

What Can You Expect from the Ballet Performance?

The entire performance is choreographed by the ballet’s artistic director, Edwaard Liang, who has won an Emmy for a short dance film and has created work for ballets all across the world. The ballet has been performing Alice for quite a while now, dating back nearly 10 years, but some updates and revisions have been made along the way. Taking over as director, Liang updated the BalletMet’s previous iteration of Alice by getting rid of spoken dialogue and other parts that otherwise interrupted the dancing and has chosen focus solely on that for the updated version. The costumes for the performance are designed entirely by Liz Vandal, who created the costuming for Cirque du Soleil, so they’re sure to be jaw-droppingly beautiful.

The performance includes snippets from Through the Looking-Glass, the sequel to Alice in Wonderland. In Alice, theater-goers will even get to watch a scene as Alice wields a sword to take down the Jabberwocky, a dragon-like creature from the novel’s sequel, showcasing the cast’s brilliant dancing and the costume designer’s genius in bringing the Jabberwocky to life on stage.

Getting out of the house or your Columbus rental apartment and seeing one of BalletMet’s spectacular performances is the perfect way to spend a chilly February evening, so go on—fall down that rabbit hole, and see what Alice has in store for you.
