Dos and Don’ts Preparing for the Spring Semester

Dec 06, 2019

One of the best things you can do during your winter break is to get ready for the spring semester. We don’t mean you need to spend every minute of your well-earned break drudging away for classes you plan to take or writing papers in advance, but there are a number of things you can do (or not do) to help take the pressure off a bit when spring rolls around.

  1. Don’t purchase textbooks in advance of actually attending class. The prof may change his/her mind, or you may not need the book, or else you can get it online or by borrowing it.
  2. Some profs will publish calendars and syllabi. If you can get hold of one, you can input important dates and assignments in your calendar. You can also get a jump on things by reading books, say, for a literature or history class.
  3. Register for classes early. Open registration at OU is through January 17. Register now online (anytime – except the Tuesday evenings and Saturday nights and Sunday mornings when registration may be down for maintenance) and avoid the rush.
  4. Make sure your financial aid is in place. That most likely means completing your FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) by late December and getting it in by OU’s first-priority consideration date of January 15, 2020. Download the myStudentAid app and complete the application by phone. The app is available from Google Play Store or the Apple App Store.
  5. Make a list of supplies you need for class and buy them before class begins so you’ll be ready. Keeping to a shopping list prevents overspending.
  6. Clean up your Athens Ohio rental if you didn’t do it before you left for holiday break. You’ll feel better prepared for the stresses of the spring semester if you start out with a clean home.

Choosing the Perfect Housing for Spring

In addition to your academic preparation, one significant factor that can influence your semester’s success is where you stay. Let’s delve into some accommodation insights that align with your Spring semester preparations:

1. University Housing vs Off-Campus Options: While the Ohio University housing system offers the convenience of being on campus, many students often find value in exploring off-campus housing options. The diverse offerings, from studio apartments to six-bedroom houses, allow you to find a spot that aligns with your preferences and budget.

2. Location Matters: If you’re someone who thrives in a lively environment, you might want to consider uptown rentals. On the other hand, those who appreciate a quieter setting might opt for an apartment on East State Street. Proximity to campus is crucial too, with numerous rentals near the university ensuring you aren’t late for those morning classes.

3. Amenities and Features: Whether you’re keen on an Athens rental with a picturesque view to inspire your studies or one close to bars for a weekend hangout, there’s something for everyone. Some students prioritize a rental with a yard for outdoor activities or weekend barbecues.

4. Budgeting and Costs: If you’re looking to cut costs, considering student rentals could be beneficial. On the flip side, if you’re willing to spend a bit more for a plush experience, there are luxury apartments up for grabs. Ensure you check out multiple rental companies to get the best deal.

5. Transport and Movement: Securing off-campus parking can be a lifesaver, especially if you have a car. But if you’re planning a move or need to haul things to your rental, remember there are moving truck rentals available locally.

6. Engage in Campus Life: Being part of events like the Ohio University parents weekend can give you a wholesome college experience. Knowing the vicinity around, be it Court Street apartments or those near the campus, helps in ensuring you never miss out on the action.

7. Seasonal Rentals: Given the flexible nature of semesters and occasional needs, there might be times you’d look for short-term accommodations. The wide array of rentals, from three-bedroom houses to those catering exclusively to students, means you’ll always find something fitting.

So, while gearing up for Spring, remember that a conducive living environment can significantly influence your academic performance and overall well-being. Athens offers a rich tapestry of rental options that cater to every student’s unique needs. So, as you prepare academically, ensure your living space complements and enhances your university journey. Happy house hunting and here’s to a successful Spring semester!
