Decisions, Decisions: Live on Campus or Off ?

Apr 15, 2019

Updated with current information for 2023

Many students wrestle with whether to live on or off campus. When you live on campus, you’re right in the middle of the vibrant college experience. You can easily partake of social activities, naturally, but there’s also the convenience of getting to class and all the campus amenities, usually without needing to drive.

Privacy

But there are many benefits when you live in off-campus housing in Athens Ohio.

For instance, not everyone can adjust to having a roommate – which is a likelihood if you live on-campus. Do you treasure your privacy? Do you study better when you’re alone? Are you worried a dormmate with annoying habits might be too close for comfort? Maybe you’d be better off listening to your inner lone wolf and looking into an off-campus rental in Athens Ohio where you can have your own space. Even if you have to rent a house or apartment with several bedrooms and you need roommates, you’ll have your own crib to sleep and study in.

Save Money

With the right off-campus housing, you can save money. But before you sign the lease agreement, make sure you’ve done a realistic assessment of your finances. Consider your income or housing allowance, and figure in rent, utilities, deposits, move-in fees, laundry and food.

Also, pay attention to the fine print in your lease agreement. Be sure you understand the duration of the lease, and any penalties for breaking it.

Commute Time

If you have a car, commute time to campus may not be a big issue for you. But you may also need to figure in the cost of parking your car on campus if you commute. If you don’t own a car, how will you get to campus – walk, shared ride, bicycle or bus? Lyft is operating locally, as are Liberty Mobility Now and local taxi services if you’re running late and need a fast ride.

How important is independence and flexibility to you?

Another important factor to consider when deciding whether to live on or off campus is the level of responsibility and independence. Living off campus in a student rental means taking on more responsibilities, such as paying bills, managing finances and maintaining the property. This can be a great opportunity for students to learn valuable life skills and gain independence. However, it can also be overwhelming for some students, and they may prefer the structure and support provided by living on campus. It really depends on the type of student rental. Some houses are pretty cool, but come with yards to keep clean and parking spaces to maintain. Plus, a five-bedroom house with four roommates isn’t appealing to everyone. You’d need to rent a whole moving truck just to move in and out of the off campus house. Smaller spaces, like a one-bedroom or studio apartment, are nice and easier to maintain, but come with a hefty price tag. That nice view of uptown isn’t free! Your best option may be to stick somewhere in the middle with a two bedroom apartment or three bedroom rental.

Living off campus can also provide more freedom and flexibility in terms of living arrangements. You have the option of choosing your own roommates and can rent a larger space if you prefer more room.

Lastly, consider the location of the off-campus housing options. If you are looking for a quieter or more family-friendly neighborhood, you may want to look further away from campus, but keep in mind that it may take longer to get to class and other campus amenities. Living near campus is more expensive, but affords you more mobility as outlined earlier.

Ultimately, whether you choose to live on or off campus is a personal decision that should be based on your individual needs, preferences, and budget. Be sure to weigh all the pros and cons and gather as much information as possible before making your decision.
