Athens, Get Your Recycle On! A Guide for Student Rentals

Wheelie BinThe average person generates over 4 pounds of trash every day, or 1.5 tons of garbage per year. Americans combined create over 200 million tons of trash per year. The EPA estimates that 75% of all trash is recyclable, but Americans only manage to recycle 30% of it, according to DoSomething.org.

If you aren’t recycling at your Athens student rental, you are part of the problem. Here’s how to become part of the solution and recycle at your apartment in Athens Ohio.

In Athens, you do not need to separate your recyclables into type. Simply separate all the recycling from the general trash and leave it in the big red bin. Place the bin alongside your trash outside your student apartment on trash pickup day.

Cardboard, Cans, Glass

Cardboard must be flattened. Beverage cans and aluminum cat food cans should be rinsed. Aluminum foil, pie pans, and other scrap. Material must be free of food. Tin/Steel Food Cans must be rinsed but you don’t need to remove the labels. Glass must be rinsed with the caps removed but labels do not need to be removed.

Plastics

#1 and #7 plastics can be recycled, including Plastic bottles such as milk jugs, pop bottles, shampoo, detergent bottles, clamshells & containers such as those used for salad, cottage cheese, yogurt & berries. Containers must be rinsed. Styrofoam is not accepted.
