The Legacy and Evolution of the Brent Hambrick Memorial Open

Mar 18, 2024

Every sport tells a story; for disc golf, a central chapter is dedicated to Brent Hambrick and the iconic Brent Hambrick Memorial Open (BHMO).

A Story of Passion and Resilience

Brent wasn’t merely a disc golf player; he embodied the spirit of the game. With aspirations stretching far beyond the horizon, Brent envisioned Columbus as the epicenter for a world-class disc golf showdown. This dream has come to life through the BHMO, a testimony to his undying passion.

However, life had other plans. Battling Hodgkin’s lymphoma and subsequently acute myeloid leukemia, Brent’s journey was fraught with trials. But even in those dark times, his enduring spirit shone through, as reflected in a heartfelt letter penned in 1997. In it, he shared his gratitude towards his disc golf family, emphasizing the unbreakable bonds within this community.

BHMO: From Columbus Open to a Memorial Tribute

Columbus has held a significant place in the disc golf community since the early 1990s. Known initially as the Columbus Open, the tournament under Brent’s leadership was unparalleled in its meticulous planning and execution. Following his untimely demise in 1997, the disc golf community, including the PDGA and Columbus Flyers Disc Golf Club, celebrated Brent’s unmatched contributions. They renamed the Columbus Open to the BHMO in his honor and established the Brent Hambrick Tournament Director of the Year award.

Today’s BHMO transcends a mere competition. With participants teeing off at the iconic Hole No. 8, the site is a solemn reminder of Brent’s journey, with a dedicated plaque and a maple tree sheltering his ashes.

BHMO 2023: Expanding Horizons

This year, the 26th Annual BHMO brought innovations to cater to the sport’s unprecedented growth. Spanning four distinguished courses — Brent Hambrick Memorial Disc Golf Course, Lobdell Reserve Disc Golf Course, Alum Creek State Park Disc Golf Course, and Kinslow Disc Golf Course — the amateur division saw an expansion, accommodating a surge of players. The pros, however, showcased their skills exclusively at the Brent Hambrick Memorial Disc Golf Course.

Adding to the excitement, this edition offered a cash prize exceeding $10,000 and acted as a regional qualifier for the 2023 LWS Open at Idlewild. With such opportunities, the competitive fervor reached new heights.

A Cause Beyond the Sport

But BHMO’s significance isn’t limited to the sport alone. Since Brent’s passing, the event has been a beacon of hope, raising funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. With contributions nearing $150,000, the Columbus Flyers, along with the broader disc golf community and sponsors, are committed to furthering this cause.

Today, the Brent Hambrick Memorial Open is more than just a game. It’s an amalgamation of past dreams, present endeavors, and a bright future. As hundreds converge — players, spectators, and enthusiasts — they’re not just engaging in a sport; they’re becoming part of an enduring legacy, keeping Brent’s memory alive and vibrant.
