Prof Retrieves Lost History of Local Black Communities

Aug 03, 2019

There’s often more to local communities than meets the eye. SE Ohio offers abundant opportunities for side trips not all that far from your Ohio University off campus housing, where you can learn more about the people who shaped Ohio history.

For instance, rural areas in Ohio have long-established black communities that are little known to their white neighbors. Tucked away on the margins of the settlements of the dominant culture, their rich history has until recent years been overlooked. The lost history of rural African Americans in Knox County is brought to the fore in a presentation by Ric Sheffield, professor of Legal Studies and Sociology at Kenyon College. Attend “The Community Within” on Aug. 22 at 5:30 pm at the Southeast Ohio History Center, 24 W. State St.
