It’s almost time for one of the biggest springtime events of the year: the Athens Full and Half Marathons. Known as “Ohio’s Longest Running Marathon,” the race began in 1968 and marks its 59th year this spring.
Both races are taking place live on Sunday, April 19, 2026. They start at 8:00 AM near South College and East Union Street in Uptown Athens. From there, the course moves past the College Green of Ohio University, joins the Hockhocking Adena Bikeway, and finishes on the Ohio University track.
Is There Any Difference Between the Full and Half Marathons?
From a spectator’s point of view, both races might seem like a single entity, seeing as they both start at the same time and place. The only difference is that the full marathon spans 26.2 miles, while the half-marathon covers half of that, 13.1 miles, and started 33 years ago.
But, as a participant, it’s important to note that the full marathon is a Boston Qualifier. This means if you’re gunning for that coveted Boston Qualifier time, this is your shot to shine. The course is USATF certified, so your time counts for real.
Plan Your Race Day Early So You Don’t Miss a Single Thing
Registration for the Athens Marathon is currently ongoing, so if you are planning to run, this is your reminder to sign up early. Spots fill up quickly the closer we get to the big day. That aside, if you register early, you get to save yourself a few extra bucks.
As for the race day logistics, things can get really crowded, and this will limit parking around the start line, so plan to arrive early. For those staying in one of the many rental properties or off-campus housing near Ohio University, you’ve got a huge advantage: you can literally walk to the start line and skip the parking headache altogether.
If you’re planning on being on the sidelines or getting cheered on as you race, mark your calendar for Sunday, April 19, 2026. The Athens Marathon is back, and it’s going to be another incredible year. Register or find more information about the event.
