Neighborhood

Columbus/Columbia – The North End

You don’t hear about Athens’ North End (or North Side) as much as you do about the Near East Side, Far East Side, Uptown, West Side or even South Side. That may be because the North End is actually several different neighborhoods without much to connect them. One of those mini-neighborhoods is located at the top of North Lancaster Street, near where that street veers to the right (and turns into Columbia Avenue). Or if you drive straight, you descend on Columbus Road toward a sprawling commercial district, access to U.S. Rt. 33, and the city limits. This area has limited restaurant options (well, just one, the Dairy Queen), though it is a short drive to nearly every part of town, and a very walkable distance to Court Street and uptown. Another plus is that from this part of the North End, the drive to Strouds Run State Park/Dow Lake (think beach, swimming, hiking, boating, camping) is a straight shot out Columbia to Strouds Run Road. In addition, access to the Hockhocking Adena Bikeway is very close, just a mile or so down Columbus Road, to where a bike-path-spur access point is located, across the street from Devil’s Kettle craft brewery.
