Neighborhood

West Side

Among Athens’ many distinctive neighborhoods, the West Side stands out for its unique, quirky character, highlighted by an interesting mix of town and gown. The West Side is far enough from the bustle of uptown and campus that you can hear yourself think and take a break from the traffic and crowds (not a bad thing during the era of COVID-19). Yet, most parts of the West Side are a walkable distance from uptown, and, of course, even closer to commercial establishments on that side of town. West Siders have numerous bars and restaurants on West Union Street down the hill from uptown from which to choose. There’s also a full-service grocery, Seaman’s Cardinal Super Market, a short walk away. Even closer to the Shafer/Central/First street mini-neighborhood of the West Side is a fine drinking establishment, the West End Ciderhouse, and the venerable Miller’s Chicken restaurant, among other businesses that cater to hungry/thirsty students and townspeople alike. The West Side also has easy access to the Hockhocking Adena Bikeway and the West State Street park (and dog park). As for housing, the variety of rentals available to students is impressive, with both houses and apartments scattered throughout the West Side.
